i feel differently these days, too, having never been totally alone by myself. in Europe there was kiwi or at least the prospect of a transient eurofriend. here in LA there is no one to talk with—what people I do meet are freaks and I’m hesitant to start conversations.

cool whip?
today i was rinsing out an empty yogurt container thinking about whether or not i should keep it to use as makeshift tupperware. i thought back to my childhood when my mom saved tons and tons of cool whip containers to store leftovers.
and then i thought to myself…did we seriously eat that much cool whip??

real life
i often wonder what real life is supposed to look like. we have a standard for what society deems normal— settle down, rent/buy a place to live, work 9-5 to pay the bills. take a vacation sometimes, meet new friends, serve periodically to get outside of yourself. marry up, have children, watch them grow old while doing all the aforementioned things.
ever since going off to college i haven’t been happy with that idea, although it’s hard to think outside of those boundaries sometimes. i get bored so easily. is this discontentment, or is this an actual desire i’ve been given to live life outside of the box?
i feel like i’ve been living the last 6 months on the edge of my seat. i’m fighting to get through this phase of grad school so that i can move onto “real life.” but i don’t even know what that means, and i think when i get there i’m going to be sorely disappointed. does real life consist of a series of tasks to pass the time until we grow old? no. it doesn’t. but sometimes it seems like that. the last few days i’ve thought a lot about the fact that whether it’s standard or not, this is what my life is made of. the cliched “journey” for lack of better term. i need to begin to recognize the little things that make up real life, instead of constantly trying to fast forward to see how it turns out.
i’m reminded of this quote, which i will leave you with:
“Sometimes the little times you don’t think are anything while they’re happening turn out to be what marks a whole period of your life.” - andy warhol
